Tracking Santa and Christmas 2005 December 26, 2005
I love Christmas, it’s such fun time of year. Over the years I have found that it’s at it’s best when you are young and waiting for Santa, or if you have a child(ren) in your life and can’t help but get swept away with the excitment with them.
On Christmas Eve, one of the things I like to do, after all of the parties is to see exactly where Santa is in his journey. For years, Norad has been tracking Santa. This year I got to witness F16 escorts for the big red guy as he made his way around the world. I showed this off to Tianna, who stared at the monitor wide eyed. Pretty sharp if I do say so myself. I read a history of Norad’s Santa tracking. This was their 50th year in monitoring the big guy zooming around the world. It all started back in 1955 when Sears decided to run an add in the paper advertising that kids can talk to Santa with a number to contact. The number was one digit off and as fate would have it, kids started to call the commander of Norad instead. The first call the bewildered commander got about where Santa was, he told the kid “Hold on, let me check the radar”, and the rest is history. Since then it’s incorporated the internet into it’s number you can call. Talk about cool things to do for Christmas….It’s nice to see the Christmas cheer spread to everyone, even the department responsible for tracking missiles and the likes. I’ve heard some people scoff at it saying it’s a waste of money or resources, I beg to differ though.
Christmas started at about 8am, Tianna was more tired than we realised as she would normally have us up at about 6am, so we got an extra 2 hours sleep, probably one of the best gifts we could have gotten. Thanks Santa! Soon the little one woke up and it’s suddenly wrapping paper pandemonium. The rest of the day was pretty standard. Lunch at my Dad’s house where we unwrapped more gifts and celebrated my sister’s birthday, then off to Robin’s grandparent’s house and Christmas dinner at about 8:30pm. Again, more gift unwrapping. By this time Tianna was in hyper-active meltdown. In the span of one minute I witnessed her go through the emotional gauntlet, crying, jumping up and down excitement, anger then tired. It was time for someone to go to sleep. Finally got home at 11:30pm and just crashed into bed.
Loot wise, got all that I wanted, including a chiminea (Think out door furnace, Mmmmmm Fire!) for the porch, clothes, and a time machine (cool gadget type clock, not stainless steel DeLorian). The only thing I really wanted but didn’t get was a pair of slippers. Apparently people felt like it would be a ridiculous gift to get me (The tech person in everyone’s lives), but I assure you it’s not as ridiculous to see the sneezing fit I go through when my feet hit a cold surface first thing in the morning, every morning in the winter. It’s not like I was asking for an XBox 360, which my friend Bill got. Bill it comes with a price though, Bristol will let you know what the price is next time you pass a jewelry store!
Now that Christmas is out of the way, my sights are set on Friday when Robin, Kevin, Sandra and I are off to Vegas for New Years! Yeah baby!
