Father’s Log - Week 30 February 17, 2006
What a week, it seems as though everything is happening at once now. This is concerning as I’m trying my best to keep my wife away from stress in general. Unfortunately I can’t be by her side all the time. For any fathers-to-be out there who may be concerned with your wife/girlfriend/whatever’s stress levels and the pregnancy, I urge you to get involved, find the root of any stress and then do whatever you can to put a stop to it. Studies have shown that stress can adversely affect the development of a baby in the womb, increases the rate of premature birth as well as decreased birth weight. You should read more about it here. Remember it’s your child, and you have only one chance to get it right, so do whatever it takes to ensure the health and safety of your significant other and your baby. I know I will.
I found myself in quite a funny situation the other day. As I was getting ready for work, I couldn’t help but notice that my poor wife was struggling to put on her socks and shoes. After a few failed attempts, she looked up at me pouting, so for the first time I had to help her get dressed. The baby belly severely hampers any effort to bend over, get up, roll over or stand from a seated position. I can only imagine how frustrating this must be, especially in light of the fact that it is only going to get worse. I of course only tease her lightly, out of arms reach of course, but she knows I’m there if she needs any help.
Went to the second baby class last night and met Liz, Rita’s partner in crime. Liz is just an energetic as Rita is, and I look forward to her Amazing Baby class. She couldn’t help but to admire all of the fathers in the class for the support they were giving their significant others, to the point where most of the mothers were rolling their eyes. I’ve come to the conclusion that Rita is determined to have the mothers knock the fathers block off with her latest exercise. She had the fathers grip the mothers arm and start pinching to simulate a contraction and build up a resistance to pain so the mothers can focus on the breathing and concentration. The look that almost all of the fathers got from the mothers, made us all back the hell up. On the way home I got an earful. “Did you have to pinch so hard?!?” We’re supposed to be doing this throughout the week practicing, however I’m not sure if I can take the beating that’s sure to follow!
Here’s what’s happening with the baby
Your baby now weighs 3 pounds / 1.3 kilograms and measures about 17 inches / 44 centimetres from head to toe. Nearly all babies react to sound by 30 weeks..
Your baby’s nutritional needs reach their peak during the third trimester. You’ll need plenty of protein, vitamin C, folic acid, iron, and calcium (about 200 milligrams is deposited in your baby’s skeleton every day), so eat foods rich in these nutrients. The skeleton hardens even more and the brain, muscles, and lungs continue to mature. So take a look at our eating well guide to make sure you are getting the right minerals and vitamins.
Like I said, the baby belly is only going to get bigger, which means that Robin will have more weight to hit me harder when I have to pinch her arm again. Lucky me!
