Another Capital idea! February 27, 2006

From the “Here we go again” department. The PLP are looking to start another capital project, one that is of great importance to everyone who lives or visits this Island. From the news report this morning, they are planning on upgrading the current hospital. This plan has already been altered as they are now not looking to relocate King Edwards (or whatever they will name it) to the area of the National Sports Stadium due to traffic concerns, and rightly so. Instead they will rebuild the hospital in it’s current location.

While I know that King Edwards needs to be revamped and modernised, the thought of the PLP undertaking another capital project, especially one the size of this, costs are estimated to be upwards from $500 million and will take approximately a decade, these are initial estimates of course, makes me shiver! The PLP haven’t even finished the National Stadium or Berkeley, two of their other capital projects, yet. While I don’t know about the costs of the National stadium or projected dates, I do know that it is taking a ridiculously long time to complete. Berkeley on the other hand is one we all know about. It’s a good $50 million over budget and climbing, and 2 years late. There are accusations about theft of materials, safety hazards and violations. After the Berkeley fiasco alone, I wouldn’t trust them to manage kids building a Lego hospital, let alone a real live one.

In reality the building of the hospital will probably take closer to 15 - 20 years, before all construction is done, and I would imagine costs approaching $700 million to $1 billion, if history is a teacher. These are the same people who thought it would be a good idea to stick recently dead people into a container truck while the morgue is upgraded. Are we sure we want them to undertake something as enormous as a hospital?
