Make the owners suffer as their animals do April 26, 2006
Horrified and angry. These are the only two emotions I feel towards Calix Darrell and his negligence and cruelty towards the animals he kept. What, in my opinion, is even more outrageous was the sentence that was thrown at him, a fine of $4,800, a 5 year ban from owning animals and a 3 month jail term, suspended for 1 year. One of the horses were suffering so much that it had to be destroyed. The rest were either starving or severely dehydrated.
Calix’s defense argued that he was a man of limited money and couldn’t afford to keep his animals. I would say he was a man of limited intelligence and should have given them away to someone who could have cared for them.
What really pisses me off is that these animals were all helpless, either tethered, caged or stabled, with no way to fend for themselves, just sitting there day after day, rotting away and suffering. I personally feel that Calix should have gotten a taste of his own medicine, he should have faced jail time (I would suggest letting him see how it feels to be locked in a cage without access to food or water, but that would make me no better than Calix, still it’s nice to ponder however), and then he should have been made to do community service which involves helping with the SPCA. With light punishments such as this, where is the deterrent for committing crimes of this magnitude? Where is the lesson? What message are we sending out to others who may be committing equally despicable crimes towards other animals?
I believe that Calix may be the automatic winner for this months IMHO CUBS, as he is, Complete and Utter Bullshit personified.

Limited funds? Didn’t he live on Five Star ISLAND?
No no,
The stables (or if you could call it that) was across the railway trail on the hillside opposite Five Star Island…
I think your idea was great…. make him work with the SPCA as community service. That’ll learn him how to treat animals better…..
[…] Sean advocates a harsher sentence for a Bermudian man charged with neglecting his animals. […]
this man is a disgrace to Bermuda
