And then there were 12…. May 16, 2006

Here\'s one...what are the other 11 doing?

Reading the Bermuda Sun today, I was pretty amazed that on most nights, there are only 12 officers on duty. 12? That’s about one officer for every 5,000 men, woman and children on an average night, during peak time (Most break-ins, fights, stabbings, shooting, whatever happens at night).

You wonder why there is so much crime as of late. With only 12 officers on patrol, the criminal element must be having a field day out there. I learned a long time ago that the police’s biggest offensive weapon was being on patrol or on location, just being there. This is proven when you round a corner in your car and see a police vehicle, you instinctively either slow down or check yourself to make sure you are in compliance with the laws. You want to drive down crime? Then get some more cops out on patrol to start with.

Instead of 11 million to Cricket, may be we should have diverted some of that funding to the people who keep our society in order? May be we could have Randy Horton come out to the next Wellington Oval Soccer and Gang Clash and then ask him what he thinks about improving this situation as he runs for cover?
