Inalienable Human Rights…… May 28, 2006
Human rights…..it a simple term. Anyone who is human, belonging to the homeo sapien genetic pool, has certain inalienable rights afforded to them by law.
Inalienable: unforfeitable: not subject to forfeiture; “an unforfeitable right”
This mean ALL people have specific rights, not just a select few who don’t conform to particular members wishes either by choice or nature. Renee Webb did an extremely brave thing. She attempted to bring Bermuda and her laws into the 21st century. This was made a mockery of by our elected, and not so elected, parliamentarians who sit on the hill and attempt to steer us in the right direction. Unfortunately too often that direction is the same direction which also contains the most amount of votes or support, enter the AME church.
While I do not personally understand what it is like to be gay, I will happily stick up for their rights, as they are apart of the human race. This sort of reminds me of another struggle that in the not so distant past where another group of people where fighting for their inalienable rights. It seems as though our culture does not learn from the past and does indeed need more growing up to do.
As a matter of fact, to get my point across and to illustrate the need to the Human Rights Act to encompass all people, not matter of race, colour, creed AND sexual persuasion, I’m going to do a little experiment. I’m going to change the word Sexual Preference or homosexuals or gay with oh, lets say with the word Black and see if this strikes home with anyone.
A General Statement
The bill, which aims to add “the colour black” to the list of things for which people cannot legally be discriminated against is the subject of a free conscience vote but last night there were signs support was slipping away.
Clip from the AME Rebuttal
“The church believes it is wrong to amend the Act without it being made clear what ‘black’ means. The proposed bill does not give a legal definition.”
A quote from Paula Cox
A couple of months ago, Finance Minister Paula Cox famously said words to the effect that she did not see the need for blacks to be protected under the Human Rights Act because she was unaware of them being discriminated against on the basis of their being black.
Horrified? Doesn’t that sound like the days before Martin Luthor King or even Abraham Lincon? I am sincerely disappointed in our current government as well as the opposition for letting this slide without even a debate (Something that I wrote both John Barritt and Wayne Furbert on). I’m sure I will probably get some flak for the above change in quotes, but it was done to prove a point. Being gay isn’t about choice, it’s about the person that you are. Agree, disagree, like it or don’t, what it boils down to is “Are we going to move forward and do the right thing in respect to everyone’s rights, or are we going to continuously find a minority group to pick on throughout life? You can not help who you are attracted to any more than you can change the colour of your skin, of course Michael Jackson appears to be trying very hard to do so and look how that turned out…..
