A Father’s Log - Smiles so bright June 28, 2006

Me and my baby

Wow, talk about exhausted. If anyone out there is under the impression that being a parent of a newborn is easy, I would suggest looking after one for a week to change their minds. These past 2 or so weeks has taken all the fight out of me. My days were pretty much getting to be the same, and getting longer and longer for some reason. Here’s my normal routine day for anyone who may still have doubts about the work involved:

The day usually starts with either Tianna or Samantha waking us up about 7ish. Robin would change and feed Samantha while I’d go upstairs and get Tianna her breakfast and make her lunch. I’d take over with Samantha, while attempting to eat breakfast one handed, if at all, so Robin can get a shower and get Tianna dressed. Robin comes back upstairs with Tianna and takes Samantha so I can get a shower and get dressed. I run out the door giving kisses to all of my girls, yes even our dog Daisy and make work, which I am now late for, again. Lunch time try and sneak home to see my little munchkin and Robin, then go back to work. Knock off around 5pm and head for home. Robin and I take turns doing something fun with Tianna, like swimming in the pool, while the other one has Sam. Up until the last week or so, Sam would be very fussy and the poor person who had her after 5pm would usually have to deal with a baby screaming in their ears for about an hour. Hand Sam back to Robin to get dinner ready, if it was my turn with her, or get Tianna in the tub if she’d been swimming, then get dinner. It’s now usually 7:30pm, which is my time with Sam, while Robin tucks Tianna into bed. I’ll either sit out on the porch or walk around with her attempting to sooth her. Robin comes back upstairs just after 8pm and takes over cause not it’s Mommy time with her (Robin is the only one who can sooth her at this time of night), while I get dinner ready for the two of us. We eat with one holding Sam while the other one eats and vice versa. I clear up the plates and the kitchen while Robin puts Sam to sleep (usually about a 1.5 hour long process). It’s now about 10ish, I finish off any work left over from the day, Robin usually hits the sack. I follow at 11pm and get woken up usually twice in the night by Sam who wants a bottle or needs a changing. Wash, rinse repeat…..

So there you have it, the day is full and not a lot of time for just relaxing. Keep this up for 6 weeks and then let me know if you have the energy to keep your blog up to date, etc. It’s not all bad, I’m happy to say that Sam isn’t going through a colicky period anymore from the hours of 6pm to 9pm. Up until a few weeks ago, she’d usually cry with about 5 minute breaks whenever you change her position, which was extremely tiring and stressful, but now she settles down and doesn’t cry. She does still insist on being carried in your arms or over your shoulder and no sitting, nope you better be walking around, again pretty tiring.

I have found two good things with her though with my time with her. Sam LOVES to be outside. If I go outside and sit so she can see the trees she usually falls asleep in my arms. I think it’s the combination of the cool breeze, the whistling frogs, the warmth from my body and the encroaching darkness that calms her. I’m just happy it works, and it’s so nice to have her snoozing in my arms.

The other amazing discovery is that I have a hold on her which she not only likes, but will ALWAYS gets her to burp almost immediately! I hold her with her back to the side of my hip, with my arm going over her shoulder and belly and supporting her between her legs, sort of like a standing football hold. She’s perfectly content cause she gets to look around and suck on my arm, I can be more mobile and I have a hand free to boot, plus if she has gas it helps her to get it out almost instantly. The only downside is that she usually ends up drooling down my arm, but you get used to that.

I’m also happy to report that Samantha has started to smile and laugh, and it’s easy to get her to do so, especially in the morning. She’s got a crooked smile just like me and a dimple on her right cheek which is adorable. I have to admit to spending countless hours making her laugh or smile, and when she does it makes my day. She also breaks out into a smile if either Robin or I come home and she sees us for the first time. I just love the fact that I’m one of the funniest people in her world, so I’ll take advantage of that while I can.

She’s also been packing on the weight, but still growing longer (taller) at the same time so it’s all proportioned, except for the cheeks which remind me of a hamster smuggling nuts. I’ll be posting more pictures of her in the next few days so stay tuned.
