License to fish July 8, 2006
Well it was bound to happen, Amateur Fishermen may be required to get fishing licenses, if the amendment put to the house yesterday passes. While being a pain in the neck for people who fish, once or twice a year at best, all in all it would be for the best as it allows the government to log what’s being caught and by whom. Bermuda’s waters are clearly over fished; this was made abundantly clear to me a few years back when I went fishing with a few friends. The captain of the boat insisted that every single fish caught was kept, even the undersize ones and wouldn’t stop until a cooler was filled with them. That was just one boat; imagine how many fish are killed before allowed to spawn each year by amateur fishermen if left unchecked? Since then I would rather be inconvenienced rather then wiping out Bermuda’s fish stock. As long as they don’t make it too difficult to get a temporary license, or an amateur one, along with checks to ensure that each boat isn’t over fishing or killing fish deemed to small, the only impact it will really have is on our waters and increasing an abundance of fish in them.
