Ordering overseas July 27, 2006

Part of my job is ordering a lot of products from various vendors, while we do out best to support the local economy, some products are either not obtainable or just too expensive, and as such I have to source them overseas. Since 9/11, ordering anything from the US is becoming more and more impossible. First it was not having a US billing address on your credit cards, which was diverted by efforts from the likes of Zip-Ex and BEST. Now some places are prohibiting sending to freight forwarding companies all together. For instance, my company used to deal with CDW, and since they have become a Fortune 500 company, they now refuse to ship via a freight forwarding company, but instead insist on shipping direct with one of the major couriers, which is quite a bit more expensive.

When asked the reason for this, aside from the response that they have no control once it goes to a freight forwarding company to ensure that it gets shipped properly (Like they have that control with Fed-Ex or DHL), I also got the ridiculous answer that “What would happen if we ship to a freight forwarding company, and they sent the shipment over to Iraq and parts of it were used by terrorists?”. This is probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. First off, what’s stopping me from sending said items to Iraq once I get them? They have now not only lost my business, but most likely, most of Bermuda’s as well as their shipping is now almost double what it was before they got their Fortune 500 designation.

This has also happened with telescope equipment, whereas they were unable to send overseas due to restrictions, until I threatened to ship my telescope back for a full refund, including the duty, shipping and handling. It’s telescope equipment for crying out loud.

Is it me or is the US in more danger of being swallowed alive by their own bureaucracy, than the very terrorists they are attempting to protect themselves against? I understand the need to be defensive, but in doing so they are becoming as reclusive as they were back in the 50’s.
