Bermuda’s taxi drivers aren’t alone August 15, 2006
Well it looks as though the taxi’s drivers, who are up in arms over the imposed deadline for the new GPS systems aren’t alone. I just picked this up from Gizmodo where Taxi drivers in London are calling BS to GPS. They’re argument is that the GPS system may tattle tale on them for things like speeding, that and the GPS system doesn’t have knowledge on road behaviour (such as a particular road being busy at certain times of the day).
While I agree with the London cab’s argument, the same can’t be said for here, as generally the imposed GPS system is more for dispatching purposes, cab availability and organisation. While I don’t know the ins and outs of our local taxi GPS systems here, anything that can improve taxi efficency is an asset in my books.
Quick story, last month I called for a cab using Radio Cabs. I gave them 15 minutes notice and proceeded to wait. 40 minutes later there was still no taxi in sight. When I called the dispatcher and asked what the problem was, I was told that there weren’t any units available in my area. This astounded me as I was actually in Hamilton at the time. Fortunantely another cab from the new rival company came along so I hailed him down. I’ll bet that if I had walked down to the Hamilton Princess there would have been at least 3 taxi’s waiting in a line idle. It’s situations like this that don’t bolster a lot of public support for the taxi operators and their GPS woes.
