The Back-burner October 26, 2006
So it now looks like both Ewart Brown and Alex Scott are putting the topic of Political Castration, otherwise known as independence, on the back-burner. Could it be that both are doing whatever they can to win support, which includes doing a complete 180 degree turn (actually it’s more like a 90 degree turn as 180 would actually be doing what the majority of the electorate wants, which is a referendum). They are stuck in between a political rock and a hard place as both want independence, both are also towing the line with independence as it is apparently the core of the PLP’s belief that Bermuda becomes an Island nation, however both need the public support right now. It’s amazing how some politicians quickly loose their resolve when faced with the threat of popular support.
So now both have told us, in a political cowardly fashion, that they will be stepping back from issue of independence, but I would wager that soon after Friday, regardless of who wins, Independence will start to rear is head again. Exactly how much more education on the subject do Bermudians need? What else could we possibly say about it that hasn’t been said in the last 3 years? Both Scott and Brown, the men who would be kings, are looking for the magic bullet to persuade the electorate into a concept that is wanted not by the majority of Bermudians, but rather a select few who make up the inner echelon of the ruling party. Is that democracy?
If either Scott or Brown had the balls to do what’s right, instead of additional delay tactics which allow maneuvering room, they would give in to what the electorate have requested for, that would be a referendum. Scott hasn’t even mentioned the word referendum for the last few months now, and Brown managed to completely skirt around the issue when he made public his platform. Not to mention that the proverbial back-burner is already full of other half baked schemes from the last 8 years. Crime, housing and economic empowerment for ALL Bermudians to name a few.
I would suggest that our “leaders “ start to acknowledge the needs and requests of the people instead of letting another dog eat dog competition consume the PLP for another 4 years. The belief that Alex Scott had united the PLP party were seriously overstated, as Brown was obviously lying in wait until his next time to achieve power. With all of the internal bickering and posturing, I find myself asking this very simple question, “When do these guys find the time to run the government?”
Update: Here’s the RG article. Apparently Independence isn’t a priority now. Come on Scott, stop flapping around like a fish out of water and grow a spine!
