A Father’s Log - 6 month milestone November 19, 2006
Last week, Samantha hit the half year mark. I still can’t believe that she’s turned 6 months already. The last 6 months has flown by at an astonishing speed, and what worries me is that it will all pass as quickly.
Samantha is still as happy as ever. Very rarely is she fussy, hunger pains and tiredness not withstanding. We’ve recently moved her to a new daycare where she seems extremely happy. All of the teachers seem to dote on her, one in particular who ensures she gets Sam as soon as we bring her in, which reinsures us greatly about leaving her out of our care daily. One thing we have noticed is that since moving to the new place, Sam has been exhausted when we pick her up, and usually soon falls asleep on the car ride home. The new day care has a much larger space for the babies to crawl around in, and Sam LOVES to move around.
On the home front, we’re renovating the Condo, which allows us to open up an area where Sam’s crib will be. In a few years she will move in with her sister, but for now she’s going to have lots of space to do what babies do best, get into areas where they’re not supposed to go. I was recently at the brunt of a very small temper tantrum which surprised me. Sam, taking an interest in the sun coming through the sliding glass door, commando crawled over to where she wasn’t supposed to go. I picked her up and put her back on the mat, only to have her stubbornly do the same thing again. I picked her back up and returned her to the mat and she gave me a sound which I could only interpret as being really pissed at me for hindering her progress. I was stunned, however I’m sure this is mild to compare to what I have to deal with in the future.
Sam is a bundle of energy though; no idea where she got that from. She’s most happy when she’s in the standing position so she can bounce. Her ultra-saucer is being put to the test constantly as she is always bouncing. She sounds like a jackhammer from downstairs. My dad gets a real kick out of watching her do this as she’s got a huge smile on her face, mouth wide open and dimple on full display as she shows off this new talent.
We’ve recently brought her a toy hammer, which when struck makes a variety of cartoonish noises and lights up. Sam has gotten the concept of striking things down pat and now smacks everything in range. Ok, the hammer was actually brought for me so I can take it to work to hit people who do something stupid on the computers, but I’ll let Sam use it for now.
Sam still occasionally wakes up in the middle of the night for a bottle, which we’ve been told not to give in to as she doesn’t need it except for a comfort feeling stemming from separation anxiety, which she needs to break out of. This is becoming less and less frequent fortunately and Robin and I are starting to remember what a full nights sleep feels like.
The 6 month milestone also meant that it was time for another round of shots for poor Sam. I managed to squeak out of this appointment due to work commitments again, but in reality, I don’t know if I would be any good watching a doctor stick her with a needle twice and having Sam break into tears. It would take a lot of restraint on my part not to give into the knee jerk reaction of sending the doctor through the nearest wall after inflicting pain on my little girl, so it’s probably better for all involved if I’m not apart of that situation. Ah well, what’s a protective father to do?
