But I was kidding! December 22, 2006

Bork Bork Bork

Everyone’s been talking about the food incident in which the head chef at Elbow Beach, while creating dinner for the PLP members, made a crack about putting arsenic in Ewart Brown’s food, which led to his subsequent resignation and immediate deportation from Bermuda.

I’ve been listening to this one, and I”m sorry, I have to stick with my first reaction. That was a pretty stupid thing to say given the position that he was in, and I can’t argue with what was done. I know I’m about to get some flak for this but let me bring up two points that led me to this opinion of mine:

1. Anyone, in whatever capacity that they work, is put in some position of trust, which their job relies on. As such, there are some things that you can and can not say, ESPECIALLY when on the job. In the computer industry, I would never joke around about releasing confidential information or creating a virus. Why? Well I would instantly loose credibility, and most importantly trust, which someone in my position requires. Lets take this into a different light. If you were a cop, would you joke around about putting a cap in someones ass while in uniform (Translation for my more senior readers: Blowing someones brains out with a gun)?

2. How do you think the head chef at a restaurant would be treated in say the US for making a comment like this while the president was dining at their establishment, or the Queen in the UK, or any other head of state anywhere else? Some might say that he got off light considering the age of terrorism we are currently in.

Sure, the motives of the person who squealed may or may not have been honourable, but this is a case of “Don’t shoot the messenger”. It was a dumb comment to make and you reap what you sow. Some comments, even if a joke, should never be made.
