Clearly it’s a racist thing…. January 13, 2007
Well incase you haven’t seen it yet, the RG printed their second piece of the Bermudian blogosphere. This one interviewed Calvin Smith and Laverne Furbert.
One point that I may reference, and it appears more of an angle that the RG is utilising, as opposed to a quote is…
- She also knows each of the most influential bloggers is white and male.
When you add those two observations, a user is left with some tough questions about the role race plays in the blogosphere.
I’m a bit confused as to this point of view. While demographically speaking there should be 3 black writers and 1 white writer, does the fact that we all happen to be white males present a racist connotation to the community? Would it help for everyone out there to learn that I am in fact considered an “Other”, being of Portuguese descent and all? Does this help you digest that it is possible for 4 white men to be outspoken without being racist? Even more an interesting question….does the blame lie at our feet for there not being more black blog authors out there? Do you, the reader, really feel that this is a conspiracy from the 4 white bloggers who were interviewed?
I think that maybe all the facts are made public and that in fact there are more than 4 local blogs on the Island. You can find most of them here. Limey in Bermuda has an even larger list. You will also be pleased to note that there is a Bermudian based blog which is written by black authors, its called BeachLime, and it’s a good read. I might also add that this site has been up long before IMHO.bm was even conceived. So what was the point about white males in the blogosphere again? Yeah that’s right, go take your cup of “shut the hell up” and drink it quietly. Jeesh!
On a more serious note….is anyone else getting real tired of EVERYTHING coming down to race nowadays? Really it’s like you either belong to the Black Panthers or the KKK here. You can’t speak your mind without someone somewhere accusing you of being racist just because you have a differing opinion. And the people who fuel it for their own gain….yeah I’m talking about the local papers and the politicians mostly are the worst of the lot. To quote Freud “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”.
