Shirking Responsibility March 14, 2007

In an amazing duck and weave of liability and fault, Burch was on the news stating that he’s going to kick out the residents of the old Club Med hotel, but not before stating that…

“We are evicting all of the tenants at Club Med. We have no choice but to do so. That’s what everybody in this country who has complained of our lack of action has asked for.”

So lets get this straight, the PLP have done very little for housing in Bermuda, the effect of which leaves a large portion of the population to do whatever they can to have a roof over their head (Ie: Squat in Club Med). They get ignored by the same Government even though questions have been asked for years as to what’s going to happen to these people. Finally when the pressure is on, they go in, kick the people out and blame everyone else but themselves. (Not before blaming Gina Spence-Farmer of course!)Wow.

Ok first off, if the government actually had a real plan, then the people who have had to live in grotesquely sub-standard living conditions, all the while the government having full knowledge of the plight of these people without lifting a god damn finger to help them, would never have had to move in!) Give me a break!

So, what’s in store for these people? Where are they to go? Where is the plan? Hopefully it’s not the same plan that the Lottery Winners had, as they are STILL waiting for their low cost houses. Although Burch, on his radio show, indicated that they will have to wait as other projects were in the works; here’s a news flash, these people have been waiting a hell of a lot longer then when they won the lottery. For a Government that constantly insists that it can walk and chew at the same time, they are constantly tripping and landing face down in the mud. Of course they would insist that it’s someone else’s fault every time.

Just a final thought, Burch has been in the news lately rebutting claims from the UBP that there’s nothing allocated to Housing in the Budget Speech. In his math lesson he totalled up $10 million spent on housing last year and a possible $10 million to be spent on housing this year. Just as a reference point, this Government also earmarked $14 million for cricket last year and $15 million for soccer. While I’m all for improving our national sports (while contributing to all the sports sectors in a more equal fashion, but that’s another argument) does anyone have a serious issue with this much money being spend on Cricket and Soccer while people live in such poor conditions? For a Government for the people, as they have always claimed, you would have thought that we would ensure those of us who are less fortunate would have more money set aside to assist them than a soccer or cricket team. I’ll leave it to you to decide this one…..
