To serve and to protect June 22, 2007
I have always enjoyed reading the opinion pieces of the Bermuda Sun columnists. I find their insight usually spot on when it comes to issues in Bermuda; often they see things from a removed and overall picture that many do not. Today’s opinion piece from Tom Vesey is well worth mentioning for the simple reason that it cuts right to the heart of the BHC matter. In short he views this scandal for what it’s worth and removes the race and politics from it. It can all be summed up in this one quote:
- “One thing that all these outrages have in common is that the Government and the police’s priority was not to protect the public - which ought to be their one and only duty - but to protect themselves.”
How utterly true, if you stop and look at the current issue, ask yourself if the deeds of our current Premier are for the better of the Island, or the betterment of himself?
As I said before, all of us know the difference between right and wrong, the problem is that we let our political or racial biases cloud that judgement. In reality, right and wrong transcends PLP, UBP, white or black. It’s time we all cut the crap and look at these allegations and the fallout from them going public for what they really are.
