Vested Interests October 15, 2007

From the Do as I say, not as I do files. What some people don’t realise about writing a blog, is that you usually have a lot of half written writeups, or though processes, so are left there until you can finish them, while others are released immediately. I was going through my list, when I came across this one below. I thought it was still timely in light of the Stem Cell research center which he’s got a hand in. I couldn’t help but think how ironic this was considering he remarks from a past speech….

I listened to the sound byte on the news this morning of Dr. Brown making his closing speech last Friday. He went on the attack arguing that if the PLP had ministers with vested interests in their ministries portfolios that all there would be immediate calls of corruption.

While I don’t care for Dr. Brown’s style of we can do it because you did it, he does hit on something I’ve always felt strongly about. I feel we should do away with part time politicians, either you put all your effort into the job, or don’t do it at all, it should be their one and only job while in that office. To that end, ALL politicians should have their vested interests publicly available with the addition of legislation for any said politician either being engaged in, or engaging in any activity which would prove to be a conflict of interest for their political or government duties.

This would involve business, charitable or personal engagements.

Maybe if we had something like this in place, along with PATI and a decent Whistle Blowers act, we wouldn’t be going into a tail spin over corruption, alleged or not.
