More Bermudian than you October 19, 2007
It never ceases to astound me as to the ignorance that vomits from some people’s lips. I refer to the letter to the editor in today’s RG, where the traveler is indicated that he isn’t Bermudian cause he’s not 1. black and 2. went to a private school.
This attitude does not surprise me, but it does annoy the hell out of me. Something similar to this happened to me indirectly a few months ago. My car was struck from behind by someone attempting to overtake on the inside of the road. Following procedures that I have always been instructed to, I called the cops for insurance purposes, much to the annoyance of the person on the bike. After mouthing me off, and me not budging in the slightest he sat across the road and uttered “FN foreigners don’t know the laws in my country”. I was informed this after the fact by my friend who I happened to be giving a lift to at the time. Knowing me well he questioned why I didn’t say anything about that in response. Having not heard him, the opportunity was lost, but I can assure you I would have.
Sentiments like this are now common place on this Island. There is a growing populace of sheer ignorance who assumes that if you don’t talk with an approved Bermudian accent, or are black then you are a foreigner. I would like to remind people that 1. We are all foreigners and that NONE of us were here when the Deliverance shipwrecked those many moons ago and 2. Being Bermudian has no bearing on color, creed nor who’s been here the longest. If that were the case, then I could very easily consider about half the population, probably including the one that rear ended my car, a Johny Come Lately.
What we are seeing is the starting of a xenophobic breed of Bermudians who are misguided into a feeling of entitlement due to color or position. We have already started down this slippery slope and picking up speed with each asinine law (I.e. The workforce equity bill) that the current government comes up with. Last time I checked, a Bermudian was a description for someone who was born and/or lives in Bermuda, regardless of the colour of their skin.
