Today is P Day! October 29, 2007
That is:
P for Privy Council Ruling
P for Premier and is the election going to be called soon and
P for Poll results
Well today is the day of the long awaited ruling from the Privy Council. The decision is one of freedom of speech versus the right to know. It’s been a long hot summer, both temperature and politically-wise as speculations about this ruling have been hashed out to the point of exhaustion. It became so talked about that even we Bermudians got tired of the speculations. Right now we just want to know the facts and make are decision as such. Of course now with another writ being filed it may be yet again delayed. Odd, I always thought that the truth sets one free.
On to our next “P”. I’m constantly asked about the election and when I think it will be called. This summer I put my foot down and said no more speculations. I knew it wasn’t going to be this summer; as I said from the get go that this is mis-information for the Opposition to expend valuable resources and to keep the PLP members happy and revved up. Unfortunately it’s we, the electorate, who are now suffering from severe election burn out. Now rumours are abound again, mongered by the newspapers and again I’m constantly being asked about the date. So here’s my take, I think it depends on the ruling of the Privy Council. If the ruling is in favour of the Gag order I believe it will be called soon. If not then I wouldn’t hold my breath for one in 2007 or even early 2008.
Which brings us to our last “P”, as in poll results. Wow, neck and neck with a not so favourable rating for the Premier (Our second P). This fact has probably been known for some time and would explain the latest interview with Dr. Brown where his tune has changed from the usual center stage hot the spot light activities to “The Election is not about me” stance. It would also be the reason why an election hasn’t been called yet as obviously the cards aren’t completely in his favour.
Update: Good news to the public, the Privy Council has ruled in favour of the media! The bad news is that the public have to foot a bill that could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Thanks Dr. Brown!
