Saving Tax Payers Money March 26, 2008

On the news and on the tongues of many people today is Government’s sudden cost saving initiative. While I’m all for cost savings (Ultimately yours and my money), I’m sort of divided on this without knowing all of the facts. Were advertising fees axed with ALL print media outlets or just the Royal Gazette? If only the Royal Gazette, then I remain suspicious of Government’s motives. While it’s not required for Government to explain each and every decision, what we should be concerned with is Government using it’s purchasing power to coerce, manipulate or otherwise intimidate any person or entity of the Bermuda public.

How else can Government save money? They have only come up with two, who has a few other suggestions? Lets look at the two they did propose to start with. I look forward to exactly how many cars Government will reduce it’s fleet by. Last count there were over 100 GP cars on the road, which is ridiculous. Last time I checked there were some large government vehicles on the road, some of us call them buses. Maybe a free pass to government employees can be forthcoming and they can utilise this mode of transportation for the majority of the times they need to get around.

Speaking of transportation lets look at Governemnt trips, hell I’d axed at least half of them. This is an area that has gotten out of control. Government MP’s should be made more accountable and responsible for their out of Island “work”. This is one area that PATTI would be most beneficially. I would love to know where our MP’s travel, for what reasons, what was spent and why. It is after all our dime.

While we’re on about saving money, those new fancy tracking devices for our cars that are being installed. While I applaud Government for utilising technology to automate something that takes up too much of our police force’s manpower, I sincerely hope that the savings goes back into the pockets of the motoring public. In short, lets see the licensing fees for vehicles go down by how much money was recouped by the new system. If it doesn’t then it’s a dismal failure as far as the public is concerned, at the very least with the added revenue I would expect to never hit another road in need of repair again.

What other ways can we get our Government to save us money or utilise services more effectively?

While we’re on road repairs, what about using our prisoners, now costing us about $80,000 each per year to do some road works, freeing up Works and Engineering to do something more constructive, or possibly reducing the workforce size necessary. The prisoners can recontribute back to society while being rehabilitated.
