Answerable to None May 28, 2008

Between yesterday and today, this issue got me to put fingers to keys again. Dr. Brown, yesterday, went on the defensive with some pretty ludicrous remarks.

Dr. Brown’s analogy concerning the Opposition and other groups desire to make information public over various issues where he says it’s akin to asking a neural surgeon to come out of the operating room in the middle of an operation to answer about costs and procedures.

Bermuda needs to wake up and start asking pertinent questions that ALL of our MP’s are required to answer. To Dr. Brown’s remark about being pressed for information, and to carry on with the flawed analogy, as a patient (Which Bermuda is in this analogy), I would expect to know the answers to cost and procedures BEFORE engaging in any operation. Come on Dr. Brown, your a doctor, albeit not a Brain Surgeon, but if you ran your practice the same way you carry on in politics, then I suspect you wouldn’t have many patients willing to engage your services on the operating table without first knowing costs or procedures, again carrying on the analogy. Government MUST have a plan to act on before engaging in any business of the people, at least one would hope. I’m sure that Col. Burch would back me up with an old regimental motto of “Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance”, after all. If so why can’t Government release the proposed budgets, the plans and procedures before the projects are carried out? They have the technology, it’s call the Government Portal and it is woefully under utilised. I for one would love to know what our Government is going to do before they go ahead and do it, cause usually once it’s done, it’s too late.

What makes this matter worse is Dr. Brown shutting down parliamentary debate last week and then just today Stanley Lowe stating that any questions before December 2007 are not required to be answered as they pertain to a completely different Parliament. Odd thing about that statement is that, funnily enough, it’s still the same cast of characters, plus or minus a few. Dr. Brown backs this up by saying that answering these questions was a waste of time. Strange comment considering the amount of complaints of filibustering that was being done by the ruling party. Like them or not, it’s the Opposition’s job to ask questions for the people of Bermuda, cause the information isn’t forth coming. For a Government that said they were behind the freedom of information, it’s now been 8 years to see any movement on this matter and all indicators from the Brown’s Government indicate that our existing rights to information are going to be stripped away as well. This is not progressive, this is regressive.
