Speaka de Englash? June 26, 2008
Burch has it right in today’s paper when he says that we should have legislation to introduce competency in speaking English as a prerequisite for working in Bermuda. I wholehearted agree with this. Aside from the obvious irritation of simple processes like ordering food or services and bumping into a communication barrier, what about dealing with Government matters, which can be difficult to handle even if you do speak the Queens English. This falls into line of hiring the right foreign workers for the right job. If they can’t accomplish the most basic requirements of their job, communicating in the lands native tongue, then how are they the right person for the job? And no it shouldn’t be just a written test, it should be a verbal one as well.
